Black Box Dance Theatre (BBDT) is a Raleigh-based nonprofit company recognized for making dance relevant, inspirational, and accessible to all people and bodies. Founded under the Artistic Direction of Michelle Pearson in 2014, BBDT serves as a catalyst for meaningful human connection, powerful storytelling, and transformative artmaking. Nationally recognized for its work with veterans and active-duty military, the USO has designated Michelle and the artists of BBDT as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for their leadership in movement-based resiliency programs for service members. BBDT’s partnerships span a wide range of cultural, educational, and civic institutions, including the U.S. Department of State, USO, Dance Complex of Boston, Arts NC, the National Science Foundation, the American Dance Festival, the William C. Friday Fellowship, United Arts Council of Raleigh, the NC Museum of Art, the North Carolina Arts Council, Arts Together, and numerous arts organizations and school districts across the state.
