Inspired Math, A Deeper Dimension

How can I use art as a vehicle for distributing the mathematics that I do?
— Dr. Tye Lidman

Inspired Mathematics offers an evening of complex math, eloquent dance, and the deeply human connections between them. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, Inspired Mathematics seeks to advance mathematics one small leap through the creation of dance “inspired” by current research on knot theory, topology, and the 4th dimension. It offers a multimedia showcase that captures the imagination and forces you to examine your own understanding of our place in this world.

The premiere of Inspired Mathematics in Sept 2018, included several community groups: Rainbow (Intergenerational) Dance Company, NCSU Math and Engineering students, and Enloe High School Dance Ensemble. Each group rehearsed between 6-10 hours for the show. This structure allows for the inclusion and participation of new groups in every city. Black Box has found that community groups have the potential to add production value, scale, and celebration to some of our works. Community participants often experience deeply meaningful connections to the process of making and performing of our works.
