WHO ARE WE

Born from a community of artists who believed dance could do more than entertain, Black Box Dance Theatre (BBDT) has grown into a Raleigh-based nonprofit and professional modern dance company recognized for deeply human and physically compelling work.

Since 2013, BBDT has collaborated with artists, students, veterans, and community members across North Carolina, the U.S., and abroad to create performances that foster connection, courage, and understanding through the art form of dance.

  • OUR VISION

To live in a world where movement and creativity build empathy, connection, and belonging for all people.

  • OUR MISSION

To create and share transformative dance experiences that connect communities, reveal humanity, and inspire understanding through art.

  • OUR VALUES

    1. Integrity: We honor every story with respect, authenticity, and care.

    2. Inclusion: We believe dance is for every body and every story.

    3. Impact: We use art to spark understanding, resilience, and change.

We believe

Art is action.

There is no problem that can’t be solved with more artists in the room.

We don’t make dances about things, we make dances because of them.

In the theatre, a black box is a space where neither the performers nor audiences are held to constraints; a place where people notice things that may typically go unnoticed.

In engineering, a black box is an abstract concept of creating. A tool for making where the inner workings are a mystery, yet the outcomes are a direct response of the input.

For us, Black Box is a place where artists can bring their talent, interest, and curiosity about the world; a place where audiences, participants, and performers connect; a place where meaningful human interactions lead to the creation of transformative art.

How did we get our name?
